A Sarpanch is an elected head of a village level statutory institution of local self-government called the Panchayath. The Sarpanch, together with other elected members, constitute the Grama Panchayath. The sarpanch is the focal point of contact between government officers and the village community. Gram Sabha include all the adult citizens of the village. It is empowered to support or topple down the Gram Panchayat body. The Sabha can contribute to the number of decisions taken by the Panchayat and can modify weak decisions whenever they feel.
The Panchayat can be established for a village having a population of 1000-25000. The villages having less population are grouped under Gram Sabha. The member count usually ranges from 7 to 17 depending on the strength of the village population.
Government of Telangana Program:
Gram Jyothi – a program to empower gram panchayats, it is considered essential to prepare village development plans for each gram panchayats through a participatory approach involving the Panchayat, the self help groups, people and all interested in the holistic development of the village. Gram Jyothi Program is started to cover the following 7 key areas.
- Sanitation and Drinking Water
- Health and Nutrition
- Social Security and Poverty Reduction
- Natural Resource Management
